Lighten up, sis!

What's wrong with this picture?

A young Essence.com contributor shares lessons on being image-obsessed and how she coped with major Hollywood-glam pressure while covering the BET awards. Good stuff! And, as inspiration for our sister circle to stay frugally chic, I've added Jessie J's Price Tag vid...Keep it 100, ladies!
---------------

I'm writing to you from L.A. I'm out here at the BET Awards. And all weekend, I've been seeing fabulous people at chi-chi, foo foo events. In the past four days, I've been (window) shopping on Melrose Place, Rodeo Drive and The Grove, partying at the W, Mr. Chow and SLS, hitting up every “official” anything I can get into (and on the list for) -- all in the name of enjoying my book tour/vacay. But I gotta be honest, as I work the scene, I've been wondering where I fall short.

Here's the deal: I work a full-time job, keep a full-time hustle, and just published a book -– and of course, my new “Real Talk” blog. And yet, I can't pop bottles, rock red bottoms, or splurge on Louis Vuitton at will. And more often than not, even though I don't have kids or student loans, when I crunch the numbers, the math just doesn't add up to pay my bills, contribute to my 401(k), stash a chunk away for a rainy day, and still be high-end, designered-down four days in a row, much less today.

So for most of my getaway, I've been sitting in a friend’s cabana or VIP suite, drinking X-Rated Fusion Liqueur, sparingly. And all the while, I'm calculating numbers in my head of what everything costs to live the glamorous life. Honestly, I am also wondering what I'm doing wrong. How is it that I work from sunup to sundown (literally), and I don't have the life, that fabulous life, that so many others seem to having?

More after this jump...

We weren't the only ones...

...who thought that both the movie and film versions of 'Something Borrowed' were Something Else. You may remember that this was MBC's May selection. Only 3 of us were able to sit down and chit chat about this title but, coincidentally, we all concluded that there was just WAY too much saliva swapping. Here's a not-no-generous review where the writer says that "you don’t really like anyone here. No one deserves to be happy given the bad decisions, wrong values and susceptibility to outside pressure all the characters suffer from."

Do you agree? Is "Something Borrowed" just plain old sad?

MOVIE REVIEW
by Kirk Honeycutt

Weddings are clogging the cinema calendar these days with invitations coming in for Jumping the Broom, Bridesmaids, Love, Wedding, Marriage and Something Borrowed. What these films also share in common is a comic ineptitude that makes you wish for Divorce American Style. But one invitation at a time since Something Borrowed is the clichéd, predictable and exasperating movie under review here. The problem with this one is that of forcing rote characters into tired formulas that call to the mind the worst sort of TV sitcoms. All that’s missing is a laugh track.
Something Borrowed doesn’t so much borrow from other movies as settle into a comfort zone of raising provocative questions regarding love, commitment and marriage only to dismiss them with a brush of a hand as so much dandruff. Box office will reflect audiences’ willingness to tolerate such laziness.
The really odd thing about all the characters in Something Borrowed is how much they dislike or manipulate one another. The engaged couple is clearly mismatched, the “best friends” friendship of bride and bridesmaid is a one-way relationship and everyone on their periphery either mock or take pains to avoid each other. Fun times.

"The Help" Trailer

In theatres on August 12th! This was MBC's February Book Selection...and how fitting it was for Black History Month...kudos to Chantel for this selection! Too bad the restaurant "Mahogany Grille" disaappointed...but the Mahogany Book Club didn't. Ha!

Ready to 'Get Happy'??

Most of us in MBC enjoyed Terry McMillan's sequel to "Waiting to Exhale," or "Getting to Happy" last September. Here's an update on the film adaptation which--by all accounts--is due on sometime in 2012. Excitement!
----------------------------------

The wait is over! Angela Bassett says the original cast of "Waiting to Exhale" will reunite in the sequel, "Getting to Happy." The "Jumping the Broom" star recently confirmed rumors that she, along with Whitney Houston, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon will have a role in the follow-up film...

"[Terry McMillian] wrote 'Getting to Happy' and she's written the screenplay," said Bassett, before adding that "Loretta, Lela, [and] Whitney," are all on-board. Bassett also confirmed that Forest Whitaker will return as director.

We can't wait to see Savannah, Gloria, Bernadine and Robin reunited on the big screen! A few weeks ago, McMillian revealed that the sequel could be released next year. Get more here...
